A Marquis Who's Who Magazine 225 K nown for his expertise in stochastic structural dynamics, Dr. Yukweng M. Lin has always enjoyed exploring the vast field of engineering and sharing what he has learned with others. He began his career in China, where he was born and raised, as a teacher at Xiamen University. Several years after receiving a Bachelor of Science from the institution, he relocated to the United States to pursue continued education at Stanford University. During the 1950s, he earned a Master of Science and PhD while maintaining a variety of professional appointments. Dr. Lin briefly worked as an engineer with the Vertol Aircraft Corporation and as a teacher with the Imperial College of Engineering in Ethiopia before accepting a research engineering position with the Boeing Company. It was in this role that he truly began to shine. Motivated by his ceaseless desire to find the most effective solutions to the technical problems facing the industry, he was credited with developing a way to calculate the stress level in the fuselage. In the 1960s, Dr. Lin shifted his focus to education. He joined the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as an assistant professor, quickly rising through the ranks as an associate professor and professor of aeronautical and astronomical engineering over the course of five short years. Dr. Lin ultimately moved to Boca Raton in 1984 to become the director of the Center for Applied Stochastics Research at Florida Atlantic University. He was also recognized as a Charles E. Schmidt Eminent Scholar Chair with the College of Engineering until his official retirement in 2008. Over the years, Dr. Lin developed a reputation among both peers and students as a true innovator in his field. He taught a total of 21 PhD students during his time in academia. Reflecting on a very successful career, Dr. Lin recalls publishing his first book, “Probabilistic Theory of Structural Dynamics,” in 1967. This work was subsequently translated into Japanese one year later, causing his international popularity to grow.
