A Marquis Who's Who Magazine 235 N uclear engineer Charles R. Martin has spent his entire career researching and developing the processes, instruments and systems used to extract benefits from nuclear energy and radiation. Dr. Martin earned a Master of Military Science at the Air Command and Staff College, a Bachelor of Science in nuclear engineering from NC State University, and a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in nuclear engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology. Before becoming the prominent figure he is today, he began his career as a co-op student at Duke Energy, formerly known as the Duke Power Company, serving in that position from 1970 to 1973. He later joined the United States Air Force, earning the rank of lieutenant colonel and becoming crew commander of the 341st Missile Wing. Dr. Martin worked for other military and government institutions, including the United States Air Force Academy, the Defense Nuclear Agency, now known as the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, the United States Department of Energy, and the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board. He is currently the chief nuclear officer of National Security Technologies LLC (NSTec). Since joining the company in 2016, Dr. Martin has championed a successful migration of the NSTec quality assurance program; led upgrade efforts to enable safe, secure, compliant, and affordable operations at the new dense plasma focus facility; and completed a pilot study for a fully contained test of a nuclear thermal propulsion rocket for the National Air and Space Agency, which was reported on at the Nuclear and Emerging Technology for Space 2017 conference. Dr. Martin has received many awards, including being designated by NSTec as a Distinguished Engineer, a position that signifies an exceptional role in the engineering community for formulating numerous projects that will position the Nevada National Security Site for additional missions in the future. He is a certified software engineer, radworker II, hazardous materials worker, and in criticality safety training and nuclear surety training. CHARLES R.
