244 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION RICHARD J. MEDALIE LAWYER The Medalie Law Office Hull, MA W ith 60 years of professional experience, Richard J. Medalie is a prominent lawyer whose specialties include commercial arbitration and alternate dispute resolution. Working in private practice in Hull, Massachusetts, since 2006, he formerly served various firms throughout the ashington, D.C., and New York City regions beginning in the early 1960s. Since commencing his career as a law clerk to the Honorable George T. Washington with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in 1958, Mr. Medalie has continuously proven his versatility and tenacity as a distinguished legal professional. In 1993, Mr. Medalie was a founding member of the DC Appleseed Center for Law & Justice. The organization, which aids in establishing, sponsoring and funding state centers for law in the public interest, was framed around what was then a singular approach to pro bono law. While litigation is one tool used by some of the Appleseed centers, the organization focuses on achieving structural changes through market-based reforms, policy analysis and research, legislation and rule making. Mr. Medalie holds a BA from the University of Minnesota and an MA and JD from Harvard University. Originally intending to study Soviet and Eastern European law, hewas amember of the first U.S.-Soviet student exchange under the Lacy-Zaroubin U.S.-USSR Exchange Agreement in 1958. Subsequently, he moved on to law school to gain a better understanding of American law. Throughout his career, Mr. Medalie has accrued several fond memories. However, one of the highlights of his career was serving as chair of the three-member panel of arbitrators in one of the largest and most complex arbitrations in the history of the American Arbitration Association in the early 1980s. The arbitration involved the contract claims and disputes arising out of the Libyan Producers’ Agreement, which had been entered into law by 17 national and international oil companies that had concession in Libya during the early 1970s. In recognition of his professional achievements, Mr. Medalie has been highlighted in several editions of Who’sWho in America, Who’sWho in American Law, Who’s Who in the East, andWho’s Who in the World.
