250 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION A noted expert in American history prior to the Civil War, Dr. Frank Clement Mevers III became involved in his profession because of his family’s lineage. Edwin M. Stanton, President Abraham Lincoln’s secretary of war, was Dr. Mevers’ great-great- grandfather. Due to his intimate ties with American history, Dr. Mevers developed an early interest in and ultimately found his calling in the field. Dr. Mevers holds a BA in history and an MA from Louisiana State University, as well as a PhD in American history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He began his career as a prominent editor whose work included The Papers of James Madison in Charlottesville, Virginia, from 1972 to 1973; “The Papers of Josiah Bartlett” in Concord, New Hampshire, from 1974 to 1977; and the William Plumer papers from 1977 to 1979. From 1979 until his retirement in 2010, he was the state archivist for the state of New Hampshire. Dr. Mevers attributes his success to his many mentors, including Don Higginbotham, a director at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, who was a renowned expert in early American history. He was also influenced by Michael Birkner and Paul Willerson, as well as William Gardner, the New Hampshire secretary of state. Known for being efficient and productive in making information available for research purposes, Dr. Mevers is currently working on a project called the “Index to Petitions,” which has been cited in numerous books. Since 1974, Dr. Mevers has been a publications committee member of the New Hampshire Historical Society. He is a former member of the New England Archivists, the American Historical Association and the Organization of American Historians. As a testament to his success, he has been featured in multiple editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Politics and Who’s Who in the East. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, he has been married to Kathryn Ann Hayes since 1967 and is the proud father of two children. In his spare time, he enjoys stamp and coin collecting.
