A Marquis Who's Who Magazine 255 D r. Jere Holloway Mitchell is a celebrated physician researcher and educator who has won numerous awards for his work in physiology, cardiology and the cardiopulmonary system. Dr. Mitchell has been the Carolyn P. and S. Roger Horchow Chair in Cardiac Research since 1989 and is a member of the courtesy staff at Zale Lipshy University Hospital. He has also been an attending physician with the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Dallas since 1969, as well as a professor and attending physician at a number of hospitals in the region. At 90 years old, he remains a valued editorial board member of Clinical Physiology and Functional Imaging, the latest of his prolific contributions to medical literature going back to 1965. Dr. Mitchell attended the Virginia Military Institute and earned a Bachelor of Science with honors in 1950. He became a doctor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in 1954 and completed his internship and residency with the Parkland Health & Hospital System in Dallas. From 1956 to 1958 he served as a cardiology fellow with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, and he later worked for the Laboratory of Cardiac Energetics program within the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute in Bethesda, Maryland. Notably, Dr. Mitchell was the director of the Harry S. Moss Heart Center from 1976 to 2000 and the Frank M. Ryburn Junior Chair in Heart Research from 1982 to 2000. In 2000, the University of Copenhagen awarded Dr. Mitchell an honorary PhD for his many years of medical excellence. He is also listed as a Marquis Who’s Who Industry Expert, as well as the recipient of an Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award and a Marquis Who’s Who Humanitarian Award. In recognition of his contributions to medical research, Dr. Mitchell has been honored with a 2012 Paton Prize from the Physiological Society, a 2007 Honor Award from the American Physiological Society, and selection as the 2003 Edward Adolph Distinguished Lecturer for the organization’s Environmental and Exercise Physiology Section. He is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
