A Marquis Who's Who Magazine 261 A s a physical education teacher, Dr. Emily Moore is responsible for developing curricula and teaching the fundamentals of popular team sports, sportsmanship, and the etiquette associated with various games played during class. Dr. Moore became involved in her profession after discovering that she had a natural ability for playing team sports. She found that this team spirit carried over to her individual endeavors and set an uncompromising standard of excellence. To prepare for her career, she earned a Bachelor of Science in physical education and a doctorate from Morgan State University, as well as a Master of Science in education and counseling from Hofstra University. Currently she teaches at Ulysses Byas Elementary School, which is a part of the Roosevelt Union Free School District. When Dr. Moore learned that not everyone is treated fairly in life, she set out to demand fairness by speaking out against inequality and injustice whenever she saw it around her. She was the first of 11 students at Morgan State University to be arrested for refusing to leave a segregated movie theater, which subsequently led Dr. Martin Luther King to make a trip to the college to encourage her and her colleagues. She served in Nigeria as a Peace Corps volunteer, organized a Friends of SNCC group in Paris, and served with Queen Mother Moore for three years in a delegation touring the United States and Tanzania. In 1975, Dr. Moore founded the Alliance Junior Tennis Development Program, the mission of which is to teach young people discipline, self-control and academic excellence. Her program has awarded many young students full tennis scholarships and produced graduates of some of the nation’s most prestigious colleges and universities. Dr. Moore attributes her success to her mother’s encouragement to do her best when she was a child, which to her meant being consistent and disciplined, exercising self-control, and working hard in everything she does. She hopes for continued growth for her business in the near future. EMILY MOORE, PHD PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER Ulysses Byas Elementary School Roosevelt, NY
