A Marquis Who's Who Magazine 267 H oping to be remembered as a one-of-a-kind, versatile figure in the field of law, Robert E. Muir was a patent attorney for more than five decades. A pro bono attorney for Prairie State Legal Services, he emphasizes the importance of listening to clients, having worked with destitute individuals who were in need of legal services. Prior to serving pro bono, he worked as a partner with Husch and Eppenberger from 1997 to 2004, and a general patent counsel and assistant manager in the patent department at Caterpillar, Inc., between 1986 and 1997. A former senior patient attorney for Caterpillar Tractor Company from 1974 to 1986, he also was a partner with Morsbach, Pillote & Muir and an associate with McCanna, Morsbach & Pillote. Mr. Muir began his career as a student at Valparaiso University, where he earned a BS in civil engineering in 1955. He then worked as an engineer for the Indiana Highway Commission for nearly a decade and subsequently received a JD from Indiana University in 1964. In addition to being admitted to the Canadian Patent Office and the United States Patent Office, he has been authorized to practice law in Illinois and Indiana. Additionally, he is a certified professional engineer in Illinois and Indiana. Mr. Muir cites his time spent as a member of three ad hoc committees for South Korea, Mexico and Brazil during the Reagan administration as a highlight of his career. His boss was able to encourage President Reagan to make intellectual property a high priority for membership into the World Trade Organization. In addition, Mr. Muir is grateful for his expertise in writing, having been taught by the prestigious Edward Morsbach. Mr. Muir has been honored with the Heroes for Justice Award from Prairie State Legal Services in 2017, the Pro Bono Service Award from the Illinois State Bar Association from 2013 to 2014, and the Service Award from the International Law Institute in 1991.
