268 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION B efore embarking on a legal career, John Francis Murphy planned to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a physician. However, Mr. Murphy found the field of public international law interesting and decided to major in it, subsequently earning a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws in international affairs from Cornell University. Shortly after graduating, he served as an Africa-Asia Public Service Fellow in India for a year before returning to the states to begin his journey as an associate with Winthrop, Stimson, Putnam & Roberts. He then worked as an attorney in the U.S. Department of State Office of the Legal Adviser and as an associate for Kirkland, Ellis, Hodson, Chaffetz & Masters in Washington, D.C. In 1969 Mr. Murphy transitioned into postsecondary education as an associate professor of law for the University of Kansas. During his tenure there he was a professor of law and associate dean for the University of Kansas School of Law. After eight years at the institution, he joined the faculty of Villanova University, serving as a visiting professor of law for a year. He became a professor of law at Villanova’s Charles Widger School of Law in 1984, serving in that position for 30 years before earning the title of professor emeritus in 2014. During his years of teaching, he also served as a visiting professor of law at Cornell University, Georgetown University, the University of San Diego and Louisiana State University. He also taught internationally, reaching as far as Paris, London and Israel. Although he is no longer teaching, Mr. Murphy is frequently asked to compose. He is currently working on a commentary about the state of humanitarian interventions. In 2017 he was asked to write an article for the 50th anniversary issue of the American Bar Association’s The International Lawyer publication. He has composed several books on the topic of international law and published “Luck of the Irish: A Memoir,” which chronicles his life, in 2015.
