A Marquis Who's Who Magazine 269 L ooking back on a medical career that sanned more than four decades, Dr. Charles L. Murray remains grateful to his parents for providing him with a most influential upbringing. In addition to being accepting and encouraging of diversity, his father was extremely charitable toward others, while his mother was a principled Sunday school teacher who taught the importance of hard work and commitment. Hoping to follow in their footsteps, Dr. Murray chose to pursue a career that would allow him to make a truly positive impact on the world. He ultimately settled on medicine, which he saw as the perfect combination of his desire to help others and his conviction to work in an intellectually challenging field. After receiving a BS from MIT and an MD from the University of Minnesota in 1961, Dr. Murray completed additional training through Stanford University. During this time, he was introduced to Dr. Saul Rosenberg, who seemed to know everything there was to know about Hodgkin’s disease. He also spent two years in the U.S. Air Force. Not long after completingmedical training, Dr. Murray began working in 1972 at the Park Nicollet Medical Center as an oncologist and as a professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School. He remained in this position until 1998 and was then recognized as a professor emeritus with the school. He developed and was medical director of the Methodist Hospital Cancer Center and the Park Nicollet Cancer Research Center. Dr. Murray considers his most notable achievement to be developing a computerized cancer registry, which went on to be utilized by 26 hospitals across Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota. All but one of these hospitals became certified as a cancer center by the American College of Surgeons. The 26 hospitals made up the consortium called TUMORS (the Upper Midwest Tumor Registry), which was headquartered at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. He was medical director from 1974 to 1998. A respected voice in his industry, Dr. Murray has contributed more than 50 articles to medical journals. CHARLES L.
