A Marquis Who's Who Magazine 275 F ew medical professionals have been active for as long as Dr. John B. Nettles, who first launched a career as an educator in the 1940s. Since then, he has continued to share his wealth of knowledge and experience in the fields of obstetrics and gynecology, most recently serving as a professor with the School of Community Medicine at The University of Oklahoma – Tulsa from 1981 to 2009. He is now recognized as a professor emeritus by the university, in addition to holding an emeritus medical license in the state of Oklahoma. Looking back, Dr. Nettles recalls becoming involved in his profession as a result of his family’s influence. He graduated from the Medical College of South Carolina in 1944 at the height of World War II. Choosing to practice medicine and serve his country too, Dr. Nettles completed additional training at Pearl Harbor before he was drafted and charged with a mission in the Army Medical Corps. Following the completion of his internship, he was offered a commission in the U.S. Navy with the same ranks and privileges. Although this meant that he would soon be stationed on a ship within the combat zone, he was ultimately saved from going to war as a result of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Dr. Nettles went on to enjoy various educational positions throughout the United States, culminating with his decision to join The University of Oklahoma – Tulsa in 1969. Outside of his official appointments, Dr. Nettles has continued to be a leader in the medical community. He currently serves as a member of the reference committee to the advisory committee with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and as an intermittent delegate to the Oklahoma State Medical Association with the Tulsa County Medical Society. In recognition of his ongoing commitment to improving the standards of health care, Dr. Nettles was selected to receive the Prevention in Practice Award by the Physicians’ Campaign for a Healthier Oklahoma in 2013 and the Ed L. Calhoun Leadership in Organized Medicine Award from the Oklahoma County Medical Society in 2003. JOHN B.
