26 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION I t was during his days as a young soldier in the U.S. Army that William D. Reynolds first became interested in health care. During his service, he took master fitness and combat lifesaver courses, subsequently developing thoughts of a possible career in the field. Today, Mr. Reynolds, a registered nurse, has been working in health care for more than 20 years and is the unit director and director of dialysis and hemodialysis for St. Francis Hospital. Pursuing two different career paths has been far from easy for Mr. Reynolds, but his passion for both has kept him on top of his game. As the director of dialysis and hemodialysis at St. Francis Hospital, he supervises medical-surgical, renal, chemotherapy and stroke nursing and handles hiring, staffing, training, payroll, human resources and evaluations. He also ensures that staff members remain accredited, manages clinical duties, educates patients and families, and makes sure that equipment and water are safe to use for treatments. Mr. Reynolds admits that nursing is not a perfect science, but it’s one that provides new opportunities to learn every day. Mentoring and training new people are some of the most rewarding aspects of the job, and that feeling of giving back was also prominent in his second career in the National Guard, one he held for 20 years. Mr. Williams, a chief warrant officer three, served in the military for 31 years while also maintaining a career in health care. He was an active duty human resources technician deployed to Kuwait in 2005 during Operation Iraqi Freedom and retired as a training, advising and counseling (TAC) officer from a military academy in Alabama that trains potential warrant officer candidates. Whether it’s as an officer or a nurse, Mr. Reynolds remains motivated to do his job well because he enjoys taking care of people. His unfailing compassion for others and leadership experience in the military separate him from other professionals WILLIAM D.
