278 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION D r. Jacob Eugene Nyenhuis is a distinguished director, academic administrator and educator who has amassed more than six decades of experience in higher education. After commencing his career as an assistant in classical languages at Calvin College in 1957, he subsequently served Stanford University as an acting instructor in 1962. Thereafter, he worked at Wayne State University in a number of roles, functioning as the director of the liberal arts honors program, chairman of the Greek and Latin department, and an associate professor and full professor. After concluding his tenure with Wayne State University, he transferred to Hope College, where he has served in several capacities. In addition to being a professor of the classics from 1975 until attaining emeritus status in 2001, he also served as the dean of humanities, dean of arts and humanities, and provost. From 2002 to 2015 and since 2017, Dr. Nyenhuis has been the director of the A.C. Van Raalte Institute at Hope College, having formerly been a fellow of the institute from 2001 to 2002. In this unique position, he specializes in the classics and Dutch-American heritage. Throughout his career, he has written, co-authored and edited multiple books regarding Dutch-American history, religion, and the classics, and has also written several articles in professional journals. Highly educated, Dr. Nyenhuis holds a BA in Greek from Calvin College, as well as an MA and PhD in the classics from Stanford University. In 2001, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Hope College. In his spare time, he enjoys carpentry and volunteer work at his church. As a testament to his success, Dr. Nyenhuis received the Meritorious Service Award from the Hope College Alumni Association in 2001 and the Distinguished Service Award from the Michigan Humanities Council in 1984. He has also been featured in multiple editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in the Midwest, and Who’s Who in the World.
