292 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION U tilizing nearly four decades of experience, Dr. Alan W. Pense is an esteemed engineer, administrator and educator who has served Lehigh University for the entirety of his career. Beginning with his role as a research assistant in 1957, he ascended the ranks at the university to become an instructor, assistant professor, associate professor and full professor between 1960 and 1996, when he ultimately attained emeritus status. During this time, he also served as chairman of the department of metallurgy and materials engineering for six years, associate dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences for four years, and dean for two years. He also functioned as vice president and provost of the university for six years in the 1990s. Although retired, Dr. Pense has served as a consultant with Lehigh University and a research engineer with the National Research Council since 1997. He was previously the associate director of the Advanced Technology for Large Structural Systems Engineering Research Center in affiliation with the National Science Foundation, as well as a Danforth Fellow for 12 years. He holds a BS in metallurgical engineering fromCornell University, as well as an MS and PhD from Lehigh University. In his lectures, Dr. Pense enjoyed allowing students to learn through hands-on techniques, which made his teachings relevant and entertaining. He finds the field of metallurgical engineering to be both exciting and scary, and has lent his time and expertise to construction projects across the United States, particularly those involving buildings and bridges. Dr. Pense won the Bridge Engineering Research Award from the Bridge Engineering Association in 2009, as well as the Materials Science and Engineering Distinguished Alumni Award, the Hillman Award, and the Western Electrical Award from the American Society for Engineering Education. The recipient of the Charles H. Jennings Memorial Award from the American Welding Society, he also was honored with the Alfred Noble Robinson Faculty Award fromLehigh University and has been featured in multiple editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, and Who’s Who in the World.
