A Marquis Who's Who Magazine 297 D r. Anne Lake Prescott has held an affinity for the written word and a detective-like curiosity in weaving things together to complete a full, picturesque portrait of the symbolism and rhetoric behind classic novels and other literature. Specializing in literature of the English Renaissance and the relations between England and France, she commenced her postsecondary education as a student at Barnard College, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1959. Soon thereafter, she attended Columbia University, earning a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in 1961 and 1967, respectively. She has also studied at Radcliffe College and the University of Paris in France. With nearly 60 years of experience in higher education, Dr. Prescott was employed by Barnard College for the entirety of her career. Starting out as an instructor of English, she ascended the ranks to become an assistant professor, associate professor and full professor while simultaneously serving as chairman of the English department for four years. Due to her belief in the philosophy of “publish or perish,” she has contributed articles to journals and penned numerous essays regarding the English Renaissance and the relationship between England and France during the 16th century, including “French Poets and the English Renaissance: Studies in Fame and Transportation” and “Imagining Rabelais in Renaissance England.” Dr. Prescott is affiliated with the comparative literature program and the medieval and Renaissance studies program at Barnard. The co-editor of two Ashgate series of editions of early modern texts by modern women and Spenser Studies: A Renaissance Poetry Annual, she has maintained affiliation with a number of professional organizations, including the Renaissance Society of America, for which she was formerly a trustee, and the Sixteenth Century Society and Conference, of which she previously served as president. In 2007, Dr. Prescott was the recipient of the Colin Clout Award from the Spenser Society. However, she considers speaking at the Renaissance Society of America’s annual conference to be a crowning moment of her career. Looking toward the future, she intends to compile a collection of her essays for publication.
