298 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION A native of Lexington, Kentucky, Dr. Charles Thompson Prewitt frequently attended school trips to caves and mountains in eastern Kentucky, which prompted his interest in geology. He attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, earning a BS in 1955, an MS in 1960, and a PhD in 1962. Dr. Prewitt began his professional career as a research scientist with E.I. DuPont De Nemours & Company, Inc., soon thereafter and spent 17 subsequent years with Stony Brook University, where he served as an associate professor, full professor and chairman of the department of earth sciences. He was also involved with the Carnegie Institute of Washington as director and a research staff member of the Geophysical Laboratory, then concluded his career as an adjunct professor at the University of Arizona for 15 years, attaining emeritus status in 2018. Alongside his primary appointments, Dr. Prewitt has served as secretary- treasurer of the U.S. National Committee for Crystallography and co-director of the National Science Foundation Center for High Pressure Research. In the past, he was a distinguished visiting professor of chemistry with Arizona State University and a fellow of multiple societies, including the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Prewitt has contributedmore than 190 articles to professional journals and formerly served as editor of the Physics and Chemistry of Minerals journal for almost a decade. In addition, he is the former president of the Mineralogical Society of America. As a testament to his success, he received the Roebling Medal from the Mineralogical Society of America and the Medal for Excellence from the International Mineralogical Association. He has been an Ernst Cloos Scholar with Johns Hopkins University since 2002. Married to Gretchen B. Hansen since 1958, Dr. Prewitt is the proud father of one son. In his spare time, he enjoys participating in local community affairs. He has been featured in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the East, Who’s Who in the West, and Who’s Who in the World.
