A Marquis Who's Who Magazine 345 D r. Marilynn J. Smiley shared her passion for music as an educator and scholar for 60 years. Dr. Smiley learned to play the piano at age 7, the flute at age 12, which she continued throughout high school and college, and the recorder as an adult. Her main career, however, was in musicology. She earned a Bachelor of Science from Ball State University, a Master of Music from Northwestern University, a certificate from the Ecoles d’Art Americaines in Fontainbleau, France, and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Illinois. Dr. Smiley was a public school music teacher in Logansport, Indiana from 1954 to 1961, and transitioned to postsecondary education as a faculty member in the music department at the State University of New York of Oswego. She received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1973 and was promoted to a distinguished teaching professor in 1974. From 1976 to 1981 she served as department chair and continued teaching a wide range of music history and literature courses from then until her retirement as an emeritus professor in 2014. Outside of the classroom, Dr. Smiley has presented papers at musicology conferences, contributed articles on Renaissance and American music to professional journals, and is co-editor of the book “RemarkableWomen in New York State History.” Throughout her teaching career, Dr. Smiley has enjoyed watching her students progress musically and seeing what they have achieved in four years of college and beyond. One of her main accomplishments as department chair was accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Music. She has received grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities from 1990-1994 and the State University of New York Research Foundation in 1971, 1972 and 1974. She has held many offices in the American Association of UniversityWomen at both the state and local levels and is currently co-president of the Oswego branch. She also serves as president of the board of directors of the Oswego Opera Theater. Dr. Smiley attributes her success to her family background, inspirational teachers, supportive colleagues, strong friendships, and many opportunities for professional development. MARILYNN J.
