A Marquis Who's Who Magazine 487 N atalie Petesch — the daughter of Russian immigrants, whose mother never learned to read or write — grew up to be the first woman to win the prestigious University of Iowa School of Letters Award for short fiction. This collection of short stories was followed by her widely acclaimed feminist novel, “The Odyssey of Katinou Kalokovich.” Equally impressive is her ability to immerse herself in a wide range of cultures: to create politically left and right characters in “The Confessions of Señora Francesca Navarro,” to assume Spanish and Mexican identities in “Justina of Andalusia and Other Stories,” and to become Polish and Polish-American characters in “The Immigrant Train and Other Stories.” She has been anthologized nearly a dozen times and received numerous awards and honors. Inspired by her mother’s struggles, she endeavored “to create stories of men and women struggling heroically to overcome ignorance and poverty…not to live in a world of beautiful language alone … instead to create characters living in a real, if painful, world.” She received the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s Award for Creative Achievement by an Outstanding Established Artist in 1991.
