A Marquis Who's Who Magazine 53 D r. Ulrich Batzdorf was inspired by his father, who was a surgeon. He commenced his education as a student at the City College of New York, where he earned a BS in chemistry in 1948. Thereafter, he attended Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, receiving an MS in biochemistry and physiology in 1950, followed by an MD from New York Medical College in 1955. While in medical school, he was influenced by a professor who motivated him to consider studying neurological diseases. Since he was interested in working with his hands, it was a natural progression for him to become a surgeon. Since 1979, Dr. Batzdorf has been a professor and attending physician at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he focuses his practice on peripheral nerve surgery. Prior to these roles, he served as an assistant and associate attending physician at UCLA, preceded by a stint as a trainee in neuropathology at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. He was also a physician at Wadsworth Veterans Affairs Hospital for 26 years. A diplomate of the American Board of Neurosurgery, Dr. Batzdorf has written numerous articles in professional journals and has served as an editorial board member for the Neurosurgery journal since 1992. In an effort to remain aware of industry changes, he has maintained affiliation with the California Association of Neurological Surgeons since 1982, having previously been the president, first vice president and second vice president. Dr. Batzdorf recalls being asked to join the faculty at UCLA to be a crowning moment of his career. Prior to working at UCLA, he served as a resident and senior resident in neurosurgery at the university, an assistant resident in surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center, and an intern at the United States Naval Hospital. A research grantee from 1967 to 1978, Dr. Batzdorf has been highlighted in several editions of Who’s Who in America for his contributions to the medical industry.
