66 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION A registered professional engineer in the states of Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Oklahoma, Lester Leroy Boyer Jr. recently served as a professor of architecture at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, from 1984 to 1996 before attaining emeritus status in 1999. During this time, he also served as chairman of the design technology division within the College of Architecture at the university for two years. Prior to these endeavors, he served multiple other academic institutions and facilities, including Oklahoma State University as a professor of architecture; Bolt Beranek and Newman, Inc., as a senior consultant; the National Society of Professional Engineers as a course director; and Armstrong Cork Company as a research engineer. He commenced his career at The Pennsylvania State University, where was an instructor in architectural engineering in 1960. Dr. Boyer holds a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in architectural engineering from The Pennsylvania State University and a doctorate in architecture from the University of California, Berkeley. Notably, he has started the first of six conferences worldwide on earth-covered buildings, including in Sydney, Australia; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Shanghai, China; London, England; Delft, Holland; and Paris, France. The lead author of the book “Earth Shelter Technology,” he also chaired the energy research review panel for the Office of Energy Research within the U.S. Department of Energy in Washington, D.C., and was the director of daylight research for the National Science Foundation. In an effort to remain abreast of recent developments within the industry, Dr. Boyer has maintained affiliation with numerous organizations, including the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating andAir-Conditioning Engineers, the American Solar Energy Society, the Illuminating Engineering Society and the American Underground-Space Association, among many others. In recognition of his exceptional contributions to his profession, he received the Graduate Teaching Award from Texas A&MUniversity, a First Place Design Award from a National Energy Design Competition, and the Advisor of the Year Award from the Lancaster County PA Boy Scout Council. He has also been highlighted in multiple Who’s Who publications, including Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education andWho’s Who in the World. LESTER LEROY BOYER JR.
