78 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION J Bryan Burton has amassed more than 40 years of professional experience sharing his passion for music. To prepare for his career, Dr. Burton earned a bachelor’s degree in music education fromWest Texas A&M University in 1970, a Master of Arts from Western State Colorado University in 1973, and a doctorate in music education from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1986. The co-director of the Samuel Barber Institute for Music Educators since 2008, Dr. Burton has thrived and held many positions in the field. Between earning his master’s and doctoral degrees, he directed bands in the Orient-Macksburg School District, Jal Schools, the Bronte Independent School District and the Comfort Independent School District. With the skills and experience he gained from previous positions, he has served in a number of roles at West Chester University, including professor of music education, coordinator of graduate studies, director of the post-baccalaureate teacher certification program, and chair of the music education department. Aside from sharing his passion and knowledge through teaching, Dr. Burton has also authored several books, including the first and second editions of “Moving Within the Circle: Contemporary Native American Music and Dance” and “When the Earth Was Like New: Songs and Stories of the Western Apache.” He has written chapters in books about music education and developing strategies for teaching students at the elementary, secondary and postsecondary levels. Additionally, he has served as an editorial board member of the International Journal of Music Education, a contributing editor and editorial board member of The New Grove Dictionary of American Music, and an editorial board member of the Music Educators Journal. Dr. Burton is a member of a variety of organizations, including the International Society for Music Education, the National Band Association, the Australian Society for Music Education, the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association, the College Band Directors National Association, the College Music Society, the Society for Ethnomusicology, and the Society for Music Teacher Education.
