A Marquis Who's Who Magazine 91 A s a child, Dr. Richard W. Coan enjoyed composing music and writing stories and poems, but he also had a growing interest in the intricacies of the human mind. He pursued an education in psychology, earning a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Southern California. After launching a career as a psychology instructor at Los Angeles City College, he secured a position as a research associate at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign in 1955. In the course of two years there, he developed a number of instruments for assessing and analyzing the personalities of children in the primary grades, including the “Early School Personality Questionnaire,” which many teachers still find useful. Then he joined the psychology faculty at the University of Arizona, rising through the professional ranks before retiring from academia with the title of professor emeritus in 1989. Now recognized as an expert in personality theory, Dr. Coan has published books dealing with theory and research findings in a number of areas, including the ideal goal of personal development, the personal and theoretical pathways of individual psychologists, and the evolution of human consciousness. One of his early works, “Hero, Artist, Sage, or Saint?” has received attention in many countries. Since the turn of the century, he has written fictional works, such as “A Princess for Larkin,” that reflect a deep appreciation for archetypal symbolism and myths and tales. In 2008, he published “Masculine, Feminine, and Fully Human,” exploring the developmental paths of adult men and women, as each sex tends to develop a balanced blend of masculine and feminine traits. His latest book introduced the concept of relay writing, which he has introduced to his local writing club that he has been affiliated with for many years. In addition to writing novels and poetry and creating musical compositions, Dr. Coan has devoted his free time to supporting environmental and human rights causes. He has been highlighted in several honors publications, including Who’s Who in American Education and Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare. RICHARD W.
