118 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION D r. Bethany K. Dumas earned a Bachelor of Arts from Lamar University and a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Arkansas. While completing her doctorate, she served as a graduate assistant at the latter and became interested in linguistics. She also developed a curiosity about jury instructions and the court process, which led her to begin conducting research and attend law school. She subsequently earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence from The University of Tennessee College of Law and became fascinated with expert witness testimony, an area in which she continues to be especially proficient. Dr. Dumas made headway as a linguist and educator by earning positions at Missouri State University, Southern University and A&M College, Trinity University and the University of Tennessee (UT). During her tenure at UT, she chaired the linguist degree program, which she implemented. A lover of literature, she wrote “E.E. Cummings: Remembrance of Miracles” after meeting with the poet and has written book chapters and articles in professional journals. She is a member of the American Bar Association, the Law and Society Association, the American Dialect Society, the American Association for Applied Linguistics, the International Association of Forensic Linguistics, the Linguistic Society of America, and the Southeastern Conference on Linguistics. Additionally, she has been a consultant and expert witness since 1983, which she greatly enjoys. Dr. Dumas served as the associate editor of publications of the American Dialect Society, the editor of the Tennessee Law Review, and a member of the editorial board of International Journal of Speech, Language and the Law. She has received grants from the University of Tennessee, a Trinity University faculty research and development grant, a Southern University System Foundation grant, and a National Endowment for the Humanities Younger Humanist Fellowship. Although retired from UT, she will be teaching at the university in the near future and remains a consultant and expert witness. In recognition of her accomplishments, she was highlighted in the 65 th and 71 st editions of Who’sWho in America, published in 2010 and 2018, respectively. BETHANY K.
