A Marquis Who's Who Magazine 121 A s the managing director of G.I.E.S and Nobeltex, Laila El Gammal’s responsibilities include selling products, working as an agent for European companies, answering inquiries, reading and responding to e-mails, and performing quality assurance inspections. In 1968, she received a Master of Science in chemical engineering from Alexandria University in Egypt, where she had previously completed a Bachelor of Science in the same subject. She also spent one year researching polyester yarns at the Tashkent Institute of Textile and Light Industry. Ms. El Gammal was introduced to the textile industry by her father, Mohamed Hussein El Gammal. He had founded the textile company G.I.E.S, and when she completed graduate school, Ms. El Gammal asked her father if she could work for him. At the time he declined, saying that it was not a suitable job for women. Upon his retirement, however, he had a change of heart and allowed her to take his place. She has served as managing director of G.I.E.S since 1976 and established Nobletex under the G.I.E.S company name in 1990 in Cairo. In 1999, she then established IEI, an authorized fire protection equipment installer. Ms. El Gammal attributes her many years of success to her hard work and dedication. With the help of her family, specifically her sisters and two children, who help her run the companies, she is able to maintain her family’s legacy in the textile sales industry. Despite not working directly in the engineering field at the moment, Ms. El Gammal remains affilitated with the Association of Engineers in Egypt. Her career with Nobeltex has been recognized in many ways, including with the Award of Excellence in Business in 2007. She was also invited to attend the World Bank Conference as a female entrepreneur in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region. They were looking for women to represent different fields, and being the only woman in the textile field at the time, she was chosen. Believing that her respect for others and her desire for success has contributed to her professional growth, Ms. El Gammal hopes to eventually be succeeded by her daughter.
