124 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION W hile on her way to earning a BA from Smith College in 1958, Susan Spoehrer Elliott visited a college counselor to guide her toward finding a suitable job. She was then informed that IBM was hiring and went on to become a systems engineer for the company from 1958 to 1966. Following this prominent role, she served as a systems analyst for the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education from 1967 to 1970 while simultaneously founding her own company, Systems Service Enterprises, Inc., in St. Louis. She also acted as a systems coordinator for Boatmen’s National Bank of St. Louis from 1979 to 1983. Alongside her primary endeavors, Ms. Elliott has served on several boards for a variety of organizations, such as Ameren Corporation, the Regional Business Council, Angelica Corporation, the Automobile Club of Missouri, and the St. Louis Regional Commerce and Growth Association. She has also exhibited a passion for community involvement as a member of the board of directors of the Saint Louis Science Center for multiple years and held leadership roles with the Women Business Owner’s Committee of the United Way, the Saint Louis Zoo, Webster University, the Civil Service Commission of the City of St. Louis, and the Mary Institute and Saint Louis Country Day School. Ms. Elliott is the author of “Across the Divide: Navigating the Digital Revolution as a Woman, Entrepreneur and CEO,” published in 2011. She has been highlighted in several editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the Midwest, Who’s Who in the World and Who’s Who of American Women, though she feels the crowning moment of her career was winning the original IBM personal computer at an auction in 1983, which she subsequently used to revive her business. Ms. Elliott has been married to Howard Elliott Jr. since 1961 and has two daughters and five grandchildren. In her spare time, she enjoys golfing, exercising and playing Sudoku. She has been highlighted in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the World and Who’s Who of American Women.
