138 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION D r. Albert R. Frederick, a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology, has amassed over four decades of experience. Dr. Frederick was influenced by his father, who was a general practitioner, to join the field. At the age of 5, he had a little black doctor bag and knew that he would pursue a career in medicine. Dr. Frederick subsequently earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Florida and a Doctor of Medicine from Harvard University. He was influenced to focus on ophthalmology by Frank West, who was his instructor in medical school. In 1961, he interned at Boston City Hospital before continuing to gain experience, first as a resident, then as a fellow at Massachusetts Eye and Ear in Boston. With his love of machine work and gadgets, it was only befitting that he would enjoy surgery, which combined the fun and intrigue of manipulation and modifying systems with the more intellectual aspects of deciphering the puzzle of a complex disease. From 1965 until his retirement in 2013, Dr. Frederick served as an ophthalmic surgeon with Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston. He was also a captain with the U.S. Air Force from 1966 to 1968. Throughout his years in practice, he has come in contact with very important people in the field, including a Nobel Prize winner who taught him parasitology. Many of these experiences have been very enriching and contributed to his enjoyment of a fulfilling career. In his retirement, he enjoys several hobbies, including photography, beekeeping, numismatics, calligraphy and paleography. A member of the Harvard Club of Boston, he also participates in fundraising activities as class agent for Harvard Medical School class of 1961. Dr. Frederick has been featured in the 58th, 59th and 60th editions of Who’s Who in America. ALBERT R. FREDERICK JR., MD OPHTHALMOLOGIST, SURGEON Chestnut Hill, MA
