A Marquis Who's Who Magazine 147 A highly regarded innovator in the medical community, Dr. Richard A. Gatti is credited with pioneering the field of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and other treatments for primary immunodeficiencies. Early in his career, he gained international recognition for his direct involvement with the first non-twin sibling bone marrow transplant, which was successfully performed in Minnesota in 1968. Now, more than 50 years later, he continues to be celebrated for his various achievements as a molecular biologist, geneticist and educator. A diplomate of The American Board of Pediatrics, Dr. Gatti holds an MD from the Saint Louis University School of Medicine. He completed additional training through the Children’s Memorial Medical Center, the University of Minnesota Hospital and Clinic, and Karolinska Institutet. Since joining the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA in 1974, Dr. Gatti has co-authored hundreds of scientific articles related to his areas of focus. Notably, he was responsible for establishing the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory in 1987. His research has mostly centered on molecular genetics, diagnostics, radiobiology, and the treatment of children with ataxia-telangiectasia. As a scientist, he is most passionate about improving the quality of life for children with rare genetic conditions. In addition to holding several patents in his field of practice, Dr. Gatti has been an invited speaker to several prestigious institutions, such as Yale University, as part of the Grand Rounds Lecture Series. He has been recognized as a Distinguished Professor Emeritus with UCLA since 2015. Drawing upon several decades of experience in practice and research, Dr. Gatti recently shifted his focus toward developing medicinal treatments that will help children with mutated ATM genes. Looking to the future, he hopes to establish a company that will greatly improve the accessibility of these medications by allowing patients to purchase them directly from pharmacies. Dr. Gatti maintains involvement with a variety of medical organizations, including the Federation of Clinical Immunology Societies and the American Pediatric Society. RICHARD A.
