A Marquis Who's Who Magazine 149 D r. James W. Gewartowski has been interested in engineering since the seventh grade and always enjoyed disassembling and reassembling electronics. He later received a BS in electrical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology, an MS from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a PhD from Stanford University. While completing doctoral studies, he began his career at Stanford Electronics Laboratory, where he was a research assistant for three years. Subsequent to this appointment, he served in multiple leadership roles at AT&T Bell Laboratories, working as a supervisor of microwave sources, supervisor of the High Bit Rate Optical Data Link Group, and supervisor of the SL Optical Relay/ Receiver Group. He officially retired in 1989. Dr. Gewartowski is most proud of the time he spent working on the Telstar satellite, which was the first communications satellite in history. A contributor of myriad articles to professional journals in his areas of expertise, he was also the co-author of “Principles of Electron Tubes” and “Fundamentals of Electron Tubes,” as well as a contributing author of “Microwave Semiconductor Devices and their Circuit Applications.” Dr. Gewartowski maintains affiliation with Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu, and he is also a member of Serra International. In recognition of his exceptional contributions to the field, he received a lifetime fellowship and the Browder J. Thompson Memorial Prize from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Married to Marion Ruth Wakeman since 1956, Dr. Gewartowski has five children: Marion, Diane, Patricia, John and Karen. In addition, he is the proud grandfather of six grandchildren: William, Ken, Daniel, Allison, Anna, David, Joseph, Nicholas and Michael. In his spare time, he enjoys serving as a Catholic Eucharistic minister and volunteering at Lehigh Valley Hospital. JAMES W.
