150 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION A ctive in the legal and real estate industries since 1955, Joseph B. Gildenhorn has been a partner with Brown, Gildenhorn & Jacobs in Washington, D.C., as well as the founder and director of The JBG Companies, later a component of JBG Smith, a real estate development firm in Chevy Chase, Maryland. In addition to briefly serving as an adjunct professor at George Washington University and vice chairman of the D.C. National Sovran Bank, he was appointed as the ambassador in Switzerland by President George H. W. Bush. To prepare for his career, Mr. Gildenhorn pursued education at the University of Maryland, where he earned a BS in 1951. Soon thereafter, he received a JD and LLB from Yale Law School in 1954. He has since been admitted to practice law in the District of Columbia, as well as before the U.S. Supreme Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. An active real estate investment trust, The JBG Companies was named the most active real estate developer in the D.C. metropolitan area in 2013. After subsequently merging with Vornado Realty Trust, JBG Smith evolved with a history of developing sustainable buildings. Two of Mr. Gildenhorn’s greatest equity and construction assignments were erecting and owning the Four Seasons Hotel and the Department of Transportation building. In recognition of his exceptional background, Mr. Gildenhorn was inducted into the Business Hall of Fame in Washington in 2018 and was named Philanthropist of the Year by the National Society of Fundraising Executives in 2000. He held the title of Washingtonian of the Year, awarded by Washingtonian Magazine in 1996, and received the Corporate Citizenship Award from the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, serving as its chairman for over 10 years. Mr. Gildenhorn is married to Alma Lee Gross, with whom he has been eponymously honored with the Joseph and Alma Gildenhorn Institute for Bone and Joint Health at Sibley Hospital in Washington, D.C.
