A Marquis Who's Who Magazine 163 W hen in high school, Dr. Arlie A. Hall worked on a physics project that taught him about refraction, fascinated him and led to his choice to become involved in science. During his time as an educator, he helped students answer complex questions and inspired them to seek out knowledge for themselves. In 1967 Dr. Hall earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Kentucky, then delved into the field as an engineer at IBM. During his tenure there, he held various engineering management positions and was program manager for quality engineering education with IBM’s corporate technical education organization based in Thornwood, New York when he retired. In 1986 he began teaching lean principles and practices, which he has continued to do for the past three decades. After 25 years of service at IBM, while he was in his 50s, Dr. Hall enrolled in Vanderbilt University, where he earned a doctorate in educational theory and developing humans in the workplace. He joined the faculty of the University of Kentucky in 1994, serving as an assistant professor of manufacturing systems engineering for the mechanical engineering department. His initial work at the institution was focused on designing and developing a comprehensive lean manufacturing curriculum. The highly successful curriculum has been taught in Europe, Russia, Australia and other countries around the world. Dr. Hall authored “Introduction to Sustainable Quality Systems Design: Integrated Approach from the Viewpoints of Dynamic Scientific Inquiry Learning and Toyota’s Lean Principles and Practice,” a book representing a unique four-dimensional leadership model that is an integration of Dr. W. Edwards Deming’s Plan-Do-Study-Act learning cycle, Deming’s theory of profound knowledge, and Fujio Cho’s collaborative model focused on human resources. He holds a patent in high vacuum insulation cell technology and has developed and published skills assessment instruments for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.
