214 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION D r. Gerald Joseph Kost studied engineering at Stanford University and in Venezuela, then received a MS in engineering-economic systems from Stanford prior to the medical scientist MD-PhD program at the University of California. He received a PhD in bioengineering from UCSD and an MD fromUCSF. He was elected to Mu Alpha Theta, Phi Kappa Phi and Sigma Xi honor societies. His clinical residency comprised internal medicine/neurology at UCLA and laboratory medicine at the University of Washington. He is boarded in clinical pathology, was elected to the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry, served on its board of directors, and is licensed to practice medicine in California. For over three decades, he was director of point-of- care testing(POCT)/clinical chemistry in the Department of Pathology and LaboratoryMedicine at UC Davis Health. In 1995, he founded the POCT Center for Teaching and Research, and in 2016, the POC Institute. He received an Edward A. Dickson Endowed Emeritus Professor Award at UC Davis. A founding father of the POCT field, he has invented numerous signature concepts, including therapeutic turnaround time, the hybrid laboratory, the spatial care pathTM, and point-of-care culture. POCT is diagnostic testing at or near the site of care. By implementing POCT worldwide, he is moving rapid diagnostics and evidence-based treatment directly to homes, primary care, ambulances, ERs, critical care, and hospitals, as well as epidemics and disasters. Dr. Kost’s books codified the principles for POCT, namely “Handbook of Clinical Automation, Robotics, and Optimization; Principles and Practice of Point-of-Care Testing” and “Global Point of Care: Strategies for Disasters, Emergencies, and Public Health Resilience.” He was a founding editorial board member of Point of Care and serves on several other boards. He received over 200 honors, awards, grants, speaking invitations, keynotes, and leadership positions worldwide. He was a Fulbright Scholar in Thailand. He received the AACC (NorCal) Award for Outstanding Contributions to Clinical Chemistry through Science and Technology. Total published works exceeds 800. An avid trumpeter, he recently performed in Carnegie Hall. GERALD JOSEPH KOST, MD, PHD, MS, FAACC BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH PHYSICIAN Davis, CA
