A Marquis Who's Who Magazine 231 G rowing up, Dr. Michael E. Mahla faced many medical issues due to asthma. His quarrels with his illness ignited his passion and drive to pursue a career in the medical field. Though a classically trained pianist, he decided to study medicine. He earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Davidson College and a Doctor of Medicine from Thomas Jefferson University’s Sidney Kimmel Medical College. During his first and second years of medical school, he was exposed to anesthesia, which strengthened his desire to aid those in need of medical attention. He began practicing as an intern and resident at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. In 1982, he was granted a fellowship in neuroanesthesia at Johns Hopkins Medical Center. Dr. Mahla has helped many students accomplish their dreams of becoming doctors as a postsecondary educator. He began teaching in 1983 as an assistant professor of anesthesiology at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. From 1988 until 2015, he worked for University of Florida Health, serving as an assistant professor, associate professor, and professor in the department of anesthesiology and neurosurgery. He presently teaches students as a professor in the department of anesthesiology at his alma mater, Thomas Jefferson University, and since July 2018 has served as chair of the department. As a diplomate of The American Board of Anesthesiology, Dr. Mahla has received a plethora of awards, including the Teacher of the Year Award from the Society for Neuroscience in Anesthesiology and Critical Care in 2012, which is his career highlight. He has contributed numerous articles to medical publications such as the Journal of Neurosurgery and the Journal of Clinical Anesthesiology. Dr. Mahla remains abreast of the field as a member of the Pennsylvania Society of Anesthesiology and Critical Care and the American Society of Anesthesiologists. MICHAEL E.
