232 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION W hile researching heart attacks, strokes and kidney failure, Dr. Dennis Mangano takes great pride in the role he has played in improving drug safety. His work over the past 25 years has led to the removal of numerous dangerous drugs from the marketplace, saving approximately 12,000 lives per year. Celebrated for the significant impact he has made in his field, Dr. Mangano continues to dedicate his career to changing the standards of health care. Dr. Mangano has always held a strong passion for learning. A native of New York City, he pursued formal education at the NewYork Polytechnic Institute, where he received a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering in 1965, a Master of Science in plasma physics in 1967, and a PhD in mathematical physics in 1971. From there, Dr. Mangano completed an MD through the University of Miami School of Medicine in 1974 before pursuing additional training in internal medicine and anesthesia. He has been licensed to practice in the state of California since 1975 and received specialty certification through the American Board of Anesthesiology in 1978. Long before solidifying his reputation as a leader in themedical community, Dr. Mangano gained preliminary experience as a researcher of engineering, acoustics and electromagnetism with Bell Laboratories. He later joined the San Francisco VAMedical Center, serving as director of the surgical intensive care unit from 1977 to 1990, and as a staff physician from 1977 to 2001. During this time, Dr. Mangano also launched a career as an educator, first joining the University of California, San Francisco, as an assistant professor in residence in 1977 and rising to the rank of professor in residence in 1987. He was recognized as a tenured professor for two decades, retiring from this role in 2010. Committed to making the world a better place, Dr. Mangano remains active with numerous organizations in his industry, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He spends his free time teaching English to immigrants, working with Catholic charities, helping kids with drug problems, and acting as a big brother to children with cerebral palsy.
