A Marquis Who's Who Magazine 239 P ossessing more than five decades of professional experience, Dr. James R. McCartney has been a staff member at Butler Hospital since 1980, having formerly spent time as the director of geropsychiatry at the LifespanAcademyMedical Center in1998 andpsychiatrist- in-chief at The Miriam Hospital from 1980 to 1997. Prior to these appointments, he served Meadowbrook Hospital, Nassau Hospital, and North Shore University Hospital as an attending psychiatrist, director of the training and education department in psychiatry, chief of liaison services, and associate director. Alongside his primary endeavors, Dr. McCartney was an associate professor at Brown University from 1988 until reaching emeritus status in 1998. He was also on the advisory board for the Mental Health Association of Nassau County and was a consultant for the impaired physician committee of the Rhode Island Medical Society. He has been a participant with the Alzheimer’s Support Group since 2014. An expert in his field, he has also contributed a number of articles to professional journals. In order to remain aware of recent developments within the health care industry, Dr. McCartney maintains affiliation with the Rhode Island Medical Society, the Association for Academic Psychiatry, the Providence Medical Association and the American Association of General Hospital Psychiatrists. As a testament to his professional success, he was named a fellow of the American College of Physicians, the American Psychiatric Association and the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine. Married with four children and nine grandchildren, Dr. McCartney is a native of Elmira, New York, and is a diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners, the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and the American Board of Geriatric Psychiatry.
