248 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION A diplomate of the American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Dr. Jose Mena has served as a team physician at the Miami Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute, as well as an assistant professor at Florida International University, since 2015. To prepare for his career, Dr. Mena earned a Bachelor of Science in general science and a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine. Before becoming the prominent physician he is today, he fine-tuned his skills as an intern in internal medicine at the Veterans Affairs medical center in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He relocated to the United States, where he was chief resident of the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Boston University Medical Center from 2004 to 2007. Later he completed a fellowship in pain medicine in the University of Louisville Health Sciences Center’s department of anesthesiology and preoperative medicine. Licensed to practice medicine in the states of Florida and Kentucky, as well as Puerto Rico, Dr. Mena began his career as a chemistry tutor at the University of Puerto Rico. He served as the medical director of clinical affairs for the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Miami’s medical school for seven years before accepting a similar position at the UHealth Advanced Institute for Pain Management. He returned to the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation, utilizing his leadership expertise as an associate residency program director. Rated one of America’s Top Physicians by the Consumers’ Research Council of America since 2009, Dr. Mena supports the Medical Student Mentorship Program of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He has earned many awards in his field, including Compassionate Doctor recognitions from 2010 to 2011 and 2013 to 2016, as well as the 2010 Educator of the Year honor from the department of medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Miami Leonard M.
