Rasmussen amassed over five decades of experience in the publishing industry before retiring, having joined the field because his parents had been in the profession. He began to pursue a career in publishing at the age of 12 and subsequently earned a Bachelor of Arts in journalism from the University of Minnesota. After obtaining his degree, he went on to work with his parents’ newspaper in the circulation department before joining the United States Army in 1951. He served in the Army for three years and later returned to publishing as a productionmanager for Herald Publishing Company, whichwas later sold in 1962. He remainedwith the company for three years as a temporary publisher in Minnesota and later transferred to Ohio, where he became a publisher for Thomson Newspapers in 1965. After his tenure with the company, he realized that he didn’t enjoy the corporate world and bought a publication of his own in Minnesota. Although Mr. Rasmussen has had much success in the field, it did not always come easily. After buying his own newspaper in 1968, he experienced a setback one year later, when a fire destroyed nearly everything and displaced four renters in the building in which the newspaper was housed. However, he was able to pay off the former owner andget his business back upand running. Additionally, hewas able to help the company grow from 12 to 65 employees before his retirement in 1993. In 1970, he received an award from theMinnesota Newspaper Association for the best all-around paper, as well as a Sigma Delta Chi award from the Society of Professional Journalists for distinguished service. Although he is retired, he volunteers at the Laguna Madre Museum Foundation. Mr. Rasmussen is a member of the Minnesota Newspaper Association, forwhichhe formerly served as president and chairman of legislation, the Society of Professional Journalists, the American Legion, and the University of Minnesota Alumni Association.
