Reed felt that a career in the medical field was the most rewarding way he could give back to others. Throughout his career, he has always made his patients his first priority, dedicating his profession to the pursuit of wellness for individuals. A dependable and responsible perfectionist, he entered his profession with an open mind and accepted people with new ideas. Most recently serving as the medical director of Westchester County Medical Center until his retirement in 2004, Dr. Reedwas also the president of the medical staff and chair of the executive committee for the center. Earlier in his career, he was the founder and president of the Eastview Foundation and vice dean of New York Medical College, as well as director of the New York University Bellevue Hospital Center residency program, a professor of surgery, chief of cardiovascular surgery and chair of pediatric heart surgery. A distinguished philanthropist, Dr. Reed has contributed to the endowment of the chair of writing and rhetoric at Cornell University, the endowment of rare manuscripts in the Reading Room and Laboratory within the New York University School of Medicine, the endowment of the chair of pediatric heart surgery, and the endowment of the John Mulholland Tuition Scholarship. Renowned for establishing the Surgical Research Laboratory in 1956, which led to the protocol for assistant circulation by counter pulsation with an intra-aortic balloon, he has additionally developed multiple procedures for the repair of heart valves and invented a transcutaneous power transformer and procedures for bilateral internal mammary arteries as conduits for coronary bypass. Dr. Reed holds a DVM from Cornell University and an MD from New York University. He has been a founding member of several professional societies, including the North American Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology, the American Trauma Society, the Heart Rhythm Society and the International Association for Cardiac Biological Implants.
