308 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION F or more than 50 years, James D. Robinson has targeted and acquired profitable investment opportunities on behalf of major corporations. Mr. Robinson’s drive to become a successful venture capitalist was influenced by his parents, who both have banking backgrounds, and his mentors, George Champion, Tom Gates, Gene Black Sr., and Howard Clark. He earned a Bachelor of Science from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Master of Business Administration from Harvard University. Mr. Robinson began his professional career as an officer in various departments of the Morgan Guaranty Trust Company of New York from 1961 to 1966. After progressing with the firm, which became the modern-day JPMorgan Chase & Co., he earned leadership roles with American Express and The Coca Cola Company. During his tenure as executive vice president and president of American Express, he showed strong support for women by hiring them for senior positions. Mr. Robinson has served on the boards of the First Data Corporation, Novell Inc., OnDeck, Avant, Business Insider, and The Coca Cola Company. He co-founded RRE Ventures in 1994 and is currently the president of J.D. Robinson, Inc. Mr. Robinson is the author of “InflationOverkill: Moving the Fed into a Global Age” and “Full Steam Ahead: ‘Inflation Overkill’ Revisited,” as well as an active member of The Economic Club of New York, honorary chairman of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center ( www.mskcc.org ), and honorary member of the Brookings Institution ( www.brookings.edu) .
