312 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION G rowing up in a family of educators, Kathryn Jane Roe was heavily influenced by her grandmother, who worked in a one-room schoolhouse, and her father, who taught in Indianapolis for eight years. With an intense desire to reach the young minds of tomorrow, she received a Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts in education from Ball State University in 1987 and 1992, respectively. She has since become certified to teach in the state of North Carolina. Since 2005,Ms. Roehas been a science teacher for Cumberland County Schools in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Prior to this role, she served as a teacher for Muncie Community Schools from 1997 to 2005, an adjunct faculty member at Ball State University from 1992 to 1997, and a graduate assistant at Ball State University from 1988 to 1992. She commenced her career as an aide for Blue River Valley Schools from 1987 to 1988. The author of the book “Academic Survival Skills: Batteries Not Included,” published in 1988, Ms. Roe is a member of the International Literacy Association and the National Science Teachers Association. In recognition of her exceptional achievements in education, she was named Student Body Teacher of the Year by the Longfellow Student Council in 2003, Longfellow Teacher of the Year by Muncie Community Schools in 2003, and among the Outstanding American Teachers in 2006. In 2005 and 2006, she also won the Armed Services Science Teaching Award, and she was named Teacher of the Year in 2012 and 2014. Ms. Roe is most proud of her community, having participated in the Whitely Association neighborhood clean-up in 2004 and been active with Habitat for Humanity International from 1994 to 1996.
