326 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION D r. Albert William Schreiner knewwhen he was 4 years old that he wanted to go into medicine. He was afflicted with ear infections as a child, and his pediatrician, Dr. John Renner, often came to lance his ears before antibiotics were widely used. A young Albert admired Dr. Renner because of his ability to make people feel good and decided that he would rather pursue medicine than work for his family’s paint manufacturing company. Dr. Schreiner earned a Bachelor of Science and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Cincinnati. He began working at the VA hospital in Cincinnati as a clinical investigator in 1957 and later earned the titles of chief of medical service and director of the department of internal medicine. In 1978, he became founder and director of the department of internal medicine at Christ Hospital, where he served for 25 years. While practicing medicine, he also delved into academia at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, where he has been a faculty member since 1955. In 1962 he became an associate professor of medicine before being promoted to professor of internal medicine in 1967 and gaining emeritus status in 1998. He has served as a consultant to the medical directors of General Electric and United Home Care Hospice. Dr. Schreiner has enjoyed every aspect of his career, including teaching students and witnessing his two grandsons become doctors, both of which were extremely rewarding. As a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine, he has shared his expertise by contributing articles to professional journals. In 2017, he was honored with the Excellence in Clinical Medicine Award at the Christ Hospital andChrist Hospital FoundationGala. He remains abreast of recent developments within the field as a member of the Clinical Society of Internal Medicine, the Ohio Society of Internal Medicine and the New York Academy of Sciences.
