330 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION I n her groundbreaking book, “On Death and Dying,” Elisabeth Kübler-Ross outlines a five-stage model for grieving in the wake of a loved one’s death that includes denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. While the model isn’t meant to be linear and doesn’t examine the full spectrum of emotions that the bereaved can experience, it has become widely accepted by the general public as a representation of the often difficult process of letting go. As owner of Scott’s Chapel Hill Mortuary (www.scottschapelhillmortuary.com) , Dean Scott encounters people in various stages of grief on a daily basis and helps them put their loved ones to rest with dignity. A licensed embalmer and funeral director with nearly 45 years of experience, Mr. Scott has been in the business for as long as he can remember. In 1976, with his mother’s blessings and encouragement, he earned his license to practice, becoming the youngest funeral director in Alabama at the time. He then attended the Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service and became a licensed mortician before working in several funeral homes and developing the acumen necessary to successfully run an operation of his own. In 1999, Mr. Scott and his brother, Alfred, established Scott’s Chapel Hill Mortuary in Enterprise, Ala., and slowly expanded the business before moving to its current home in Dothan. Firmly entrenched in the fabric of the community, the staff of Scott’s Chapel Hill has assisted dozens of families with the difficult tasks of making funeral arrangements, completing and filing state and federal forms, and selecting appropriate caskets or urns for the deceased’s remains. As he moves toward his fifth decade in the industry, Mr. Scott intends to someday retire and leave the business in the capable hands of his two sons, one of whom currently works as a funeral service assistant at Scott’s Chapel Hill.
