Senkayi hasconductedresearchon thechemistry and mineralogy of lignite, mineralogical weathering processes in soils, and environmental problems associated with the reclamation of surface-mined lands for the past four decades. A distinguished figure in the field of soil science, he has been serving as an environmental scientist with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Dallas, Texas since 1997, having previously held the role of senior soil scientist with the Railroad Commission of Texas in Austin from1996 to 1997. After commencing his career as a research scientist with Texas A&M University in 1977, he was subsequently a soil chemist for PRC Environmental Management, Inc. and a senior soil chemist for Ebasco Environmental Services. Having decided to become a scientist at a formative age, Dr. Senkayi finds great importance in his work, as humankind would not be able to survive without soil. A native of Uganda, he earned a BS in geology and chemistry from Makerere University in 1971, followed by an MS in soil science from the same university in 1973. After relocating to the United States on a scholarship, he completed a PhD in soil science at the University of California, Davis, in 1977. A prolific author, Dr. Senkayi has contributed several chapters to books and has published many articles in scientific journals, such as the Soil Science Society of America Journal, Soil Science, and Clays and Clay Minerals. In addition, he has been a member of the Soil Science Society of America, the Clay Minerals Society, the Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland, and Sigma Xi. As a testament to his success, Dr. Senkayi was honored with the EPA Region 6 Gregg A. Cooke Memorial Award for Exceptional Environmental Excellence and the Exceptional Performance Award fromPRC Environmental Management, Inc. Hewas also selected for inclusion in several editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, andWho’s Who in the World. DR. ABU L.
