A Marquis Who's Who Magazine 349 W ith a focus on the treatment of injured and critically ill surgical patients, Dr. R. Stephen Smith has dedicated over 30 years to the medical field. Since 2015, he has helped future clinicians achieve their dreams, serving as a professor of clinical surgery at the University of Florida College of Medicine. He also served as a surgeon at Shands Hospital and Palmetto Richland Hospital. Prior to these positions, he worked at the University of South Carolina from 2012 to 2015, the West Penn Allegheny Health System from 2011 to 2012, and the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute from 2008 to 2011. Dr. Smith prepared for his career by earning a Bachelor of Science in biology and a Doctor of Medicine from Arkansas Tech University. He went on to complete a residency in general surgery at The University of Kansas Medical Center. From 1986 to 1987 he was a fellow of trauma and surgical critical care with St. Mary Medical Center. In 1981 he joined the U.S. Navy Reserve, achieving the rank of captain in the Medical Corps and performing surgeries at Naval Hospital Okinawa and Naval Hospital Oakland before retiring from military service in 2006. Dr. Smith has written 123 articles in professional journals and 22 chapters in books, reviewed professional journals and edited monographs. He has received a plethora of awards and recognition from the U.S. Navy, as well as many medical organizations. Most recently, he was presented with the Best Teacher Award from the University of South Carolina in 2014. He remains affiliated with the American College of Surgeons, for which he served as past chair of the Ultrasound Users Group, and the Western Trauma Association multi-center trials committee. R.
