354 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION D r. Norman Arthur Sprinthall became involved in his profession because he was interested in studying and doing work that focused on how children develop. He started out as an administrator and then decided that he would rather explore another aspect of the field. Dr. Sprinthall worked with his brother, and this convinced him to go work in academia as opposed to administration. Since 1955, he has been employed by a variety of prestigious institutions, including Brown University and Harvard University. From 1972 to 1982 he served as a faculty member, professor of educational psychology, and program chairman of counseling at the University of Minnesota. He left the institution and made a home at North Carolina State University, where he served as a professor of psychology and head of the counselor education program. In 1995 he earned the title of professor emeritus. In 2005, Dr. Sprinthall and his spouse, Dr. Lois Thies-Sprinthall, were co-recipients of the Kuhmerker Career Award. He also received the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award from the American Psychological Association. During the latter part of his career, he served as the co-director of an ethical reasoning project on public administration in the United States, Poland and Russia. Dr. Sprinthall has shared his knowledge of the field in many books and has also served as a member of the editorial boards of various professional journals. He has given back to his community, serving on the board of directors of the Josephson Institute from 1986 to 1990 and as a member of the board of advisors for Character Counts! from 1994 to 2004. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association and a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society. Dr. Sprinthall attributes his success to his brother, Richard, who was a mentor for him. He earned a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts from Brown University and a doctorate in education from Harvard University.
