A Marquis Who's Who Magazine 359 D r. Charles W. Stuber Sr. was raised on a farm in Nebraska. He received a B.S. at the University of Nebraska (UNL) in 1952 and served as a U.S. Navy officer for four years. After farming for three years, he returned to UNL and received anM.S. in plant breeding and genetics in 1961. He received a Ph.D. in genetics and statistics at NC State DR. CHARLES W. STUBER SR. PROFESSOR EMERITUS North Carolina State University Raleigh, NC University (NCSU) in 1965. He was employed by the USDA-Agricultural Research Service (USDA- ARS) as a research geneticist in 1962, and later promoted to Senior Executive Service. He also had an appointment as professor of genetics at NCSU. During his career, he served in several professional societies and remained active after he “retired” in 1998. In 2006, he returned to NCSU to develop a Plant Breeding Consortium and currently is director emeritus. Dr. Stuber is a pioneer of quantitative genetic mapping and marker-assisted selection in maize. The achievements of his four-decade career in research include the development of genetic marker systems used in maize and adapted in numerous other crops, the first methods to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL), and creation of new breeding methods that integrated molecular markers into applied breeding. His work was instrumental in creating the foundation for modern plant breeding (both in private industry and in public institutions) that relies on combining genetic marker information with field evaluations of quantitative traits. Dr. Stuber received many accolades for his scientific and professional contributions. In the USDA-ARS, he was an Outstanding Scientist of the Year in 1989 and was inducted into the USDA- ARS Science Hall of Fame in 1999. He became a Fellow in the Crop Science Society of America (CSSA) and in the American Society of Agronomy (ASA). In 1993, he became President of CSSA and President of ASA in 2002. He received the Crop Science Distinguished Career Award from CSSA. He was the recipient of the Award of Merit from the UNL Alumni Association, and in 2012, he received the NCSU CALS Distinguished Alumnus Award. Also in 2012, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Association of Plant Breeders.
