A Marquis Who's Who Magazine 367 J ay H. Tanenbaum has been a practicing attorney since he was 22 years old. The New York City native credits much of his early success to his parents, who encouraged him to work hard, even as a child. Mr. Tanenbaum began working as a shoe shiner and paper salesman at 9 years old. Three years later, he was waking up before dawn to work at a grocery store and fruit stand, only leaving to go home at 11 p.m. His extraordinary work ethic enabled Mr. Tanenbaum to buy his first car, a black Pontiac 1940 convertible, when he was 16. That same year, he graduated from high school and began driving himself to college in his newly purchased vehicle. Mr. Tanenbaum graduated from college before his 20th birthday and became a lawyer just over two years later. Mr. Tanenbaum was first admitted to practice in the state of New York in 1957. Since then, he has argued before the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York and the Supreme Court of the United States. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Hobart and William Smith Colleges, as well as a Bachelor of Laws and JD from Union College. Following a brief stint as an international trader with the Associated Metals and Minerals Corporation, Mr. Tanenbaum launched a private legal practice based out of New York City in 1964. Now, more than half a century later, he continues to provide top-notch legal representation to a wide range of clientele. Throughout his career, Mr. Tanenbaum has also been credited with service as corporate counsel to the General Gate Corporation and International Gate Corporation. He maintains involvement with the Bronx County Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association and the New York State Trial Lawyers Association. Mr. Tanenbaum has been featured Who’s Who in Finance and Industry, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who in the East and Who’s Who in the World.
