386 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION F or 40 years, Dr. Arlen Ellard Viste shared his love of science with undergraduate and graduate students. Dr. Viste was directly impacted to pursue his profession by his college teachers, as he admired what they had accomplished and was determined to follow in their footsteps. A professor emeritus of chemistry at Augustana University, he taught at the institution for 38 years as an assistant professor, associate professor and professor before retiring in 2002. Prior to his tenure at the university, he began his career as an assistant professor of chemistry at St. Olaf College in 1962 and the following year became a National Science Foundation Fellow at Columbia University, where he remained for a year. Dr. Viste received a Bachelor of Arts from St. Olaf College and a PhD from the University of Chicago. While in the process of earning his doctorate, he got the opportunity to collaborate with Henry Taube, who received the Nobel Prize in 1983, and later completed postdoctoral work with Harry Barkus Gray, an internationally renowned research chemist. While on sabbatical in 1994 he was involved with quantum chemistry education, and he mentors young students through his church in the present. Having accomplished much throughout his career, he is most proud of being a member of the American Chemical Society for 50 years and having the opportunity to work with two prominent figures in the field. He has contributed many articles to professional journals due to his vast knowledge and experience. Dr. Viste attributes his success to helping students achieve their goals.
