394 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION D r. John W. Ward is a distinguished physical chemist who has been serving the Los Alamos National Laboratory as a staff member since 1956. Employed with the laboratory for the duration of his career, he was previously a fellow in 1983 and has been a section leader since 1987. Renowned for being a high-temperature chemist in the 1970s, Dr. Ward holds the unique ability to read all of the physical chemical properties of the trans-plutonium atoms up through Einsteinium. In light of his prestige in the chemical industry, he served as a guest scientist with the European Institute for Transuranium Elements in Karlsruhe, Germany, for several years between 1972 and 1985. To prepare for his illustrious career, Dr. Ward pursued formal education at Augustana College, where he earned a BA in 1952, and Washington University, where he received an MS in 1956. He concluded his education in 1966, obtaining a PhD from the University of New Mexico on a full salary through the Los Alamos National Laboratory. A contributor of multiple articles to professional journals, Dr. Ward is the co-author of “Handbook on the Physics and Chemistry of the Actinides,” volumes III and IV, published in 1985. In order to remain abreast of industry changes, he has maintained affiliation with such organizations as the American Chemical Society and the American Vacuum Society. He is also a member of the Catgut Acoustical Society in light of his interest in musical endeavors. In recognition of his success, Dr. Ward was the recipient of a fellowship from the American Institute of Chemists and a special prize from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany in 1972. Married to Arlene Ward, Dr. Ward is the proud father of four children and nine grandchildren. In his spare time, he enjoys playing voila, choral directing, gardening andmodel railroading. He was highlighted in the 49 th edition of Who’s Who in America and the 23 rd and 24 th editions of Who’s Who in the West. JOHN W.
