400 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION D rawing upon more than 45 years of professional experience, Lois Deimel Whealey most recently served as a Rural Action AmeriCorps VISTA from 1996 to 1998, having previously been an administrative assistant for the Humanities Conference at Ohio University in Athens from 1974 to 1976 and in 1983. Prior to these roles, she served as an educator for numerous academic facilities, including Slauson Middle School, Amerman Elementary School, Fort Knox Dependent Schools and Owyhee Combined School. She additionally spent one year as an adult basic education teacher with the U.S. Air Force in Oxford, England in the mid-1950s. Ms. Whealey holds a BA in history from Stanford University, an MEd from the University of Michigan, as well as an MA in political science and an MA in social science from Ohio University. Alongside her primary endeavors, she has maintained involvement with Athens Community Television, Inc., since 2006 and Ohio Women, Inc., since 1997. The former board president of Organize!Ohio, she was also the vice president of the Ohio Alliance for the Environment, the Tri-County Career Center board and the Girl Scouts of Black Diamond, as well as the president of the Athens City School District Board of Education. A contributor of articles to professional journals, Ms. Whealey is affiliated with several organizations, including the American Association of University Women, where she has been president of the Athens branch from 1960 to 1970, 1989 to 1990, and 1993 to 2001. Most recently, she was on the Ohio board of the association from 1995 to 2004. In recognition of her exceptional contributions to her community, Ms. Whealey has accrued multiple accolades throughout her career, including the Social Justice Award for Contributions over a Lifetime from the United Campus Ministry at Ohio University in 2016. The recipient of the Nora Price Award from Planned Parenthood, she also received the Spirit Award from the League of Women Voters of Athens County and the Donna Chen Women’s Equity Award from Ohio University.
