408 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION A t 11 years old, Matthew AdamWinkler obtained his first job as a delivery boy for the Rockland Journal News. It was then that he became fascinated with newspapers and the news, and he later pursued the profession full time. After earning a Bachelor of Arts in history from Kenyon College in 1977, he worked for 10 years as a reporter and European financial correspondent for The Wall Street Journal, retiring from the publication in 1990. Since 1990, Mr. Winkler has been involved with Bloomberg L.P. as the initial co-founder and editor-in- chief of Bloomberg News alongside Michael Bloomberg. Founded to provide financial bulletins to augment Bloomberg Terminal service, the agency has grown exponentially and employs more than 2,300 editors and reporters in more than 70 countries. Mr. Winkler contributed to “Bloomberg by Bloomberg,” an autobiography that chronicles the billionaire’s meteoric rise to success. Mr. Winkler also wrote “The Bloomberg Way: A Guide for Reporters and Editors,” which was published in 2014. The recipient of an honorary doctorate from Kenyon College, Mr. Winkler served as a guest lecturer at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism; Harvard Law School; the University of California, Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism; and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Media and Journalism. He has also accrued several accolades, including the Elliott V. Bell Award from the New York Financial Writers’ Association in 2003, the Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in 2007, and the National Council for Research on Women Award in 2010. In 2015 he won the Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Journalism after hiring 4,000 journalists, which was more than any editor had hired in the news business in the past 25 years. Mr. Winkler has been highlighted in several editions of Who’s Who in Finance and Business, Who’s Who in Finance and Industry, Who’s Who in America, and Who’s Who in the World.
