A Marquis Who's Who Magazine 409 E dmund J. Wise Jr. became interested in the field of medicine at an early age, having been plagued by medical problems and visited by doctors on a regular basis. Upon graduating from Washington & Jefferson College with a Bachelor of Arts in biology, he enlisted in the United States Army Reserve, serving as a captain of the Medical Service Corps in Vietnam from1969 to 1975. While completing his service, he stumbled upon the opportunity to become a clinical care technician at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, where he worked for one year prior to earning a Bachelor of Health Sciences from Duke University. He later delved into the health care industry as a physician assistant at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee in 1974. Mr. Wise worked diligently as a PA for nearly 30 years before retiring from the position in 2003. After obtaining hands-on experience in the field, he earned a Master of Public Health from the University of Tennessee in 1990. Thereafter, he served South College in Knoxville, Tennessee, as a member of various committees and an adjunct professor in the Physician Assistant Program. Since 2008, he has been a chief adjunct faculty member at the college, teaching prospective physician assistants. Equally passionate about his community, Mr. Wise is a judge advocate of Chapter 24 of the Knoxville Disabled American Veterans, for which he raises money to provide veterans with exemplary medical care. For his contributions, he has been named a lifetime member of Vietnam Veterans of America. He also previously served on the House of Delegates for the American Academy of PAs. In recognition of his exceptional accomplishments in health care, Mr. Wise received a distinguished fellowship from the American Academy of PAs in 2013 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Tennessee Academy of Physician Assistants in 2002 and 2008. He earned the Gold Certificate of Appreciation from the AmericanHeart Association in 1983 and also holds a decorated Bronze Star Medal, a Combat Medical Badge and an Army Commendation Medal.
